Summary:

A nearly exact copy of Bosko and Honey, with a few alterations.

Description:

Honey is trying to teach Wilber to play “In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree” on the violin, but it isn’t going well. “I wanna play cowboy!” says Wilber after Honey corrects his playing. Honey gets up and calls Bosko on the phone, but Bosko sleeps as the phone rings. Bruno runs into the bedroom and tries to wake Bosko by licking his face, but Bosko scolds him — “Go away Bruno!”. Bruno answers the phone, and Honey immediately recognizes his bark, asking him to wake Bosko up. Bruno drags Bosko out of bed, and Bosko finally answers the phone. “Come on over, Bosko!” says Honey on the other end. “Okay, Honey!” Bosko replies. As Honey returns to Wilber she sees him dancing on the piano. She scolds Wilber, who grudgingly returns to his violin. Meanwhile Bosko is riding his bicycle over to Honey’s as Bruno follows alongside him. Hijinks include Bruno jumping through Bosko’s arms, the duo switching places momentarily after going through a pipe, and Bruno powering a treadmill that Bosko rides on. Bosko approaches Honey’s place and hears the music lesson. He pulls a saxophone out of his pants and begins playing the tune Wilber can’t seem to master. Honey hears him and goes out to her balcony and begins singing “(We’ve Got to) Put that Sun Back in the Sky”, which Wilber imitates in a most unflattering manner. Bosko does a soft shoe number on Honey’s walkway, and Honey repeats her song. Wilber imitates her again, grabs a tub of wash, and pours it down onto Bosko, who is left swimming on the walkway. Bosko and Honey ride off on his bicycle, as Bruno follows behind holding the picnic basket in his teeth. A chicken somehow ends up in front of Bosko and Honey, but manages to get out of the way before she is run over by the bike. Bosko and Honey ride directly into a barn, which Honey emerges from riding on the back of a cow. The cow tosses her off, which Bosko finds highly amusing. “That sure was funny!” he shouts. “Oh yeah?” she responds angrily, but before she can do anything a terrible rainstorm begins, and they run off for cover under an archway. Bruno gets hit in the behind with a bolt of lightning, then drags his derriere along the ground. Standing right under a storm pipe, Bosko gets drenched by a sudden flow of water, giving Honey the last laugh as the cartoon ends.

Notes:

–Also heard on the soundtrack: “Shade of the Old Apple Tree” and “It Ain’t Gonna Rain No Mo’ ” [LT&MM]

–Differences between this and Bosko and Honey:

  • The scene of Bosko’s phone trying to wake him up is cut, and Bosko’s phone conversation with Honey is shortened.
  • A treadmill gag is added to Bosko and Bruno’s bike ride.
  • After Honey sings on the balcony and Wilber imitates her, instead of Wilber immediately grabbing the tub of wash, we cut to a scene of Bosko dancing. After his dance, the scene of Honey and Wilber is repeated, only this time Wilber does indeed grab the tub of wash and dump it on Bosko.
  • When Bosko is drenched by Wilber, the sequence of Bosko blowing bubbles out of his sax and Honey using them to step down to the ground is replaced by a scene of Bosko swimming on the walkway.
  • Bruno’s business with the tree is cut completely.
  • The chicken gag is added to Bosko and Honey’s bike ride.
  • The sequence where Bosko and Honey ride into the barn and Honey emerges on a cow replaces the sequence of Bosko and Honey on the log from Bosko’s Holiday, though some of the animation looks the same.
